Where do poor eating habits developed in childhood lead?

Short-term

Childhood obesity is an increasing problem, with an estimated 1.5 million people in Australia under the age of 18 considered overweight or obese. In the ten-year period from 1985 to 1995 the proportion of overweight children in Australia has more than doubled and the proportion of obese children has tripled. This occurred in all age groups and for both sexes. Currently, close to 1 in 4 Queensland children are overweight or obese.

Long-Term

Over an extended period, obesity is a contributing factor in numerous conditions, including:
• Cardiovascular disease, which kills one Australian nearly every 10 minutes, affects one in five Australians, and affects two out of three families.
• Diabetes, which is the sixth highest cause of death by disease in Australia, with one in four Australian adults having either diabetes or impaired glucose metabolism.
• Associated illnesses that have been linked to diabetes include; heart disease, kidney failure, eye disease and amputation of limbs due to poor circulation.

What are the Benefits of Healthy Eating?

Short-term

A better nutrient intake overall can:
• Decrease disruptive behaviours.
• Lead to better concentration.
• Increase problem solving abilities, arithmetic and reading ability.
• Help children to develop a more positive attitude to play and learning.
• Reduce the likelihood that children will develop childhood obesity.

Long-Term

The conditions listed above are all largely preventable by developing healthy eating habits and lifestyles at an early age. Reducing these illnesses will lead to more Queenslanders living longer, healthier lives. It will also help to reduce the associated medical expenses that these illnesses typically incur.

“What a fabulous idea, my child now eats more variety at home too just after three weeks on the Yummies for Little Tummies ‘Healthy Growth Program’. I have sought professional help with a paediatrician to improve her eating habits, but by far this has helped the most.”

“It’s great that my centre can save my valuable time and effort so I can spend less time at the grocery store, less time in the kitchen and have more quality time for myself and my family.”

“I appreciate not having to think of what to include in my child’s lunch box and no more pondering about how to come up with new healthy lunch box ideas.”

“I love having one less task to do in the morning when getting my child ready for childcare, saving me half an hour everyday. Thank you.”

We provide high quality certified organic yoghurt.

We use lean Halal certified meats & poultry.

Wholemeal bread and wholemeal flour are used.

The fruit spread used on sandwiches is 100% fruit, with no added sugar.

Do you know….
Many popular spreads contain nasty artificial additives that have been found to be harmful to children.

Our food is prepared fresh daily.

Home-style cooking methods are used and traditional family favourite dishes are offered.

We do not use any nasty artificial flavours, colours, preservatives or additives.

Nuts, seafood and egg free.

We cater for special dietary requirements.

We use farm and market fresh local produce.

The food is prepared by our team of qualified and experienced Chefs.

Yummies for Little Tummies Nutrition Standards:

Yummies for Little Tummies is very selective regarding all ingredients.

An emphasis is placed on all natural ingredients.

All ingredients are screened by our qualified & experienced Dietitian and Naturopath for any nasty artificial ingredients, content of sugar, salt and bad fats.

All foods are nutritionally balanced so you know your children are receiving all the nutrients they need to be healthy.

Yummies for Little Tummies follows guidelines set by the Australian Government and Nutrition Australia for your children’s nutritional requirements.

Menu Information

The weekly menu is emailed to your centre every Thursday.

Menus are displayed in advance so you know what your children are eating.

The menu changes so one eight week period is never identical to the next.

The pureed baby food is specially designed for age groups of 6-9 and 9-12 months.

Variety of Food:

Our 8 week rotating menu provides variety for your child, even if they attend part time.

The menu does change so one 8 week period is never identical to the next as we add & remove items along the way based on feedback from the centre & what works well.

Food variety is important to provide large amounts of essential nutrients for developing children.

Do you know….
The pickle or only ‘vegetable’ found on a fast food burger prevents it from being classified as a confectionery. Most people throw away the pickle, the only ingredient high in essential nutrients.

Fussy Eaters

Fussy children change their eating habits when eating food in a peer environment.

Like toilet training and sleeping, a child will often follow their peers.

The team at your centre are trained by a qualified Y4LT Team Member on how to deal with fussy eaters.

Your centre is provided with emergency back-up food if your child will not eat a particular meal. Good quality bread and spreads are supplied to your centre.

Prevention of Disease Better than a Cure

Yummies for Little Tummies believes prevention of disease is far better than the high cost (financially, physically & emotionally) of medical intervention and cure.

A major contributor to our health care system expenditure increase is due to poor diet, nutritional education and current lifestyle choices. We can all help to change this.

Cost of Disease in Australia

In 1993–94, health care costs for cardiovascular diseases alone totalled $3,719 million.

Obesity increases the risk of developing conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease. The rate of obesity in adults has doubled in the last 20 years. It has almost tripled in ages 2-11. Obesity has more than tripled in children ages 12-19 in the last 20 years.

Reports estimate more than 280,000 Australians now suffer from diabetic kidney disease.

Almost 70 per cent of total health expenditure is funded by government.

Between 1996-97 and 2006-07, health expenditure increased from $42 billion to $94 billion.

Recurrent health expenditure was $87.3 billion in 2006-07, with 30.9 per cent for public hospital services, 19.1 per cent for medical services and 13.7 per cent for medications.

Y4LT believe teaching children healthy eating habits at an early age is vital for the reduction of preventable disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and inflammatory diseases.

Do you know….
Eating one small handful of raw unsalted nuts at home every day can reduce your chance of suffering heart disease by half.
